The History

‘This House was built by Peter Iten in the year 1523’, as inscribed in the beam in the ceiling of the living room. In 1523, a bit south of here, Michelangelo was at the height of his career, just having started work on a new major commission for the Medici family, the Medici Chapel. Giulio di Medici became Pope Clement VII in Rome. Further north, Martin Luther published his German translation of the Old Testament. China was ruled by the Ming Dynasty and America was hardly discovered. Up here, people were concerned about a shelter for grim winters and a decent harvest. The wooden houses stood the test of time. We have cautiously restored this jewel creating a cosy and comfortable place, welcoming in winter and summer, but without chichi and unnecessary luxury.

Terrace & Garden

For the terrace and garden we have outdoor furniture in the barn. On rainy days or when the cold air flows down in the evenings, you can enjoy our lounge which is situated on the covered balcony, the connection between the house and the barn.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is well equipped (fridge, stove, oven and dishwasher). Since we love cooking, you will find all equipment required and sufficient for a basic cuisine (pots and casserole, knives etc, mixer, kitchen machine). There is an Italian coffee machine and Bodum French presses. The dining table in the kitchen sits 4 and up to 8. A small stove keeps the kitchen/dining room warm and cosy in winter and on cold days.

Chalet des Amis is your perfect getaway.

The Living Room

The living room has a comfortable couch, sofa, desk, a TV including English channels. Wifi is of course also available. Heating is worth a mention: the house is old and to retain character we very consciously did not insulate it to a contemporary standard. Basic heat is provided by electric heaters. In the kitchen/dining room is a steel stove and there is a beautiful huge stove built from stone in 1846, freshly renovated. These stone ovens are fired max twice a day, morning and evening, and then give heat for at least 12 hours.

The Bedroom

The main bedroom has a king-size bed (160cm), the kids room is equipped with a double bunk. In addition, the couch in the Stube unfolds to a 100cm wide bed – for emergencies…

The Art

Art is life and life is art. We love art and there is ‘proper’ art in the flat because we can’t live without it. Info on the artists and their work is available in the chalet. We sometimes change the works around for new inspiration. You don't need to appreciate or understand but please RESPECT it.

Good To Know

A note of caution, especially for winter guests: (i) heating, see above – please bring sufficient warm clothes etc; (ii) no shoes in the house please, so particularly in winter you should bring slippers and (iii) ceilings and door frames are low, mind your head (I had too many bruises and bumps…)
